BCBC 2024 · Section 9.10 · Group D / E / F2 / F3
1 · Part 9 Applicability Check
Per Article 1.3.3.2. and Sentence 9.10.1.1.
Part 9 applies to buildings not more than 3 storeys in building height and not more than 600 m² in building area, used for major occupancies in Group C, D, E or F2/F3. Buildings exceeding any of these thresholds are governed by Part 3 — use the Part 3 calculator.
! Sound Transmission (Section 9.11) only applies to dwelling units. This commercial calculator handles fire-resistance only. For mixed-use with residential, also see the Part 9 Residential calculator.
2 · Your Unit's Major Occupancy
Per Subsection 3.1.2. classification
3 · Neighbouring Occupancies

! Ratings assume conformance with the mandatory Notes to Tables 9.10.3.1.-A/-B (absorptive material density, gypsum board type, penetration detailing). Fire-protection-rated closures (doors, dampers) per 9.10.13. apply to all listed fire separations.
7 · Related Requirements
Closures, openings, services, alarms
Closures (doors / shutters)
Closures in fire separations must have a fire-protection rating per Table 9.10.13.1. Typical values:
· 20 min closure for 30 or 45 min separation
· 45 min closure for 1 h separation
· 1 h closure for 1.5 h or 2 h separation
Solid-core wood doors ≥ 45 mm thick with self-closer satisfy 15–45 min separations per 9.10.9.3.(2).
9.10.13.1. · 9.10.13.2.
Penetrations & Service Openings
Penetrations of fire separations must be sealed with materials providing equivalent fire resistance per 9.10.9.6. Combustible piping and ducts crossing a fire separation generally require fire dampers per 9.10.13.10. and 3.1.8.10.
9.10.9.6. · 9.10.13.10.
Fire Alarm System
A fire alarm system per 3.2.4. is required where the building contains:
· an occupant load > 300 (or > 150 above/below first storey),
· a Group F2 occupancy > 250 m², or
· sleeping accommodation. Otherwise, smoke alarms per 9.10.19. apply.
9.10.18. · 3.2.4.
Exits & Egress
Exit stair shafts and ramps must be enclosed in a fire separation with a fire-resistance rating equal to that of the floor assembly served, but not less than 45 min. Travel distance and number of exits per 9.9.
